Installation tips & tricks: (Click a topic to jump directly to it)

  1. Cut material on the ground.
  2. Lower ceiling for high pitched roofs.
  3. Carry extra staples and a knife.
  4. Build a poker stick.
  5. Get a friend to help.

Cut material on the ground.

  • A full 1,000sf roll is heavy and difficult to manage in the attic.  If you accidentlly drop it, you will likely damage the ceiling.  It is a good idea to unroll and cut material into shorter lengths on the ground.  Cut lengths of about 20 to 25 ft and roll it back up into smaller lightweight easy to manage rolls.

Add 2x4 ceiling for high pitched roofs

  • If you have a steep roof pitch, it might be 12 feet or more from the attic floor to the peak of the roof.  By creating a lower "ceiling" in your attic space you can remove the need to crawl up a ladder to reach the peak of your roof.  Nail or screw 2x4's across the rafters at a lower height of around 7 or 8 feet as shown in the diagram below.

Carry extra staples and a knife

  • Nothing is worse then running out of staples when you are at the furthest part of the attic.  Carry extra staples and small tools in a fanny pack or backpack.  It is easy to loose a utility knife in the ceiling insulation, so carry an extra one with you.

Build a poker stick

  • This tool is a helpful to extend your reach and push material into hard to reach places.  You can easily make a poker stick out of a broom handle or 1x2 strip of wood.  To help crab the material fasten a nail or screw to the end of the stick.

Get a friend to help

  • While you can certainly do the job by yourself, it is always nice to have some help.  If you have a friend that is also interested in installing radiant barrier, then perhaps you can trade help.  You may also be able to save some money if you and your friend buy in bulk.  If you don't want to subject a friend to your attic, then consider hiring a college student or handyman.
